Every now and then I'll come across a passage in someones journal that is artfully written, and expresses beautifully something that is near and dear to my heart. Whenever I see something like that, I want to do something with it. Save it for posterity. Tattoo it to my forehead. Stand on a mountain top and point and shout for everyone who to see, "Yeah, that!"

I've been quietly collecting these passages for a few months now, in anticipation of somehow fulfilling this urge. I'm thinking of having one of them being randomly selected and displayed on my blog page. Or perhaps putting one at the end of each post. However, these ideas raise some ethical questions as to the moral nature of posting other peoples stuff.

Here's my feeling. If the post is public, there's no issue as long as they are linked to. If it's a filtered post on the other hand, the right thing to do would be to ask permission. Now, the place where it's a little more fuzzy is if the line came from comments in someones blog. I think the same principle applies for the most part - if they are posting a comment to a public post, no worries. If the post they are commenting on is filtered, ask first. However, I can see someone being more taken aback at something from a comment reposted than something from a post reposted. I think I'd be a lot more likely to ask the person if they posted in a comment, but I'm still undecided.

I think (assuming I ever get around to it,) that I'm going to do what I outlined above regardless, however I am curious to get some feedback about this anyhow. (Keep in mind, I am usually talking about one sentence, probably never any longer than three sentences.) So...

[Edit: not watching the poll results anymore. If you fill out the poll from this point forward, leave a comment to let me know.]

elljay tools?
January 13th, 2006 09:56 pm
Anyone know of an linux elljay client with strong tags support?

I want to redo a lot of my tags, and the provided interface is pretty lacking. The main thing I want to do is take all posts with $existing_tag_a and use $existing_tag_b instead. As far as I can tell, the only way to do that using the web interface is one post at a time.

Oh yeah - search would be cool too.

Livejournal is having intermittent problems emailing comment notifications. Until they get it worked out, check the recent comments tool to see if you missed any.

Tomorrow morning I leave for Germany, where I'll be for a week. (Yay, and stuff!) Since I know that I will never have any hope of catching up with you all when I get back, I've decided to make a travel filter, with just a few of you on it.

Also, if there's something specific you want me to read when I get back, comment here.

[elljay] Yay, tags!
June 15th, 2005 06:48 pm
Livejournal released it's new "tags" feature today. "Tags" seems to be a way to categorize your entries. Which as some of you know, is what I've been wishing for.

This post brought to you by a desire to play with the new toy.

The news item on the front page states:

We recently purged all of the accounts that have been deleted for 30 days or more, and in the process we freed up a lot of usernames that can be used with rename tokens. Check out the list of recently purged usernames to see if there's a rename suited for you.

Guess what name recently came available?

Please welcome [info]verbatim.*

I don't have time to actually do anthing with it yet, so. But it's mine. All mine!! *manic laugh*

Thanks to [info]aubreycolors for pointing me to the front page. You should go read it too.

[silly] phone user error
May 29th, 2005 03:10 pm
Ok, so I'm sure this makes sense in context, but.

As some of you may be aware, there is a [info]status journal that you can add to your flist and will thusly update you on, well things of an elljay statusy nature. A recent post regardling phone posts stated:

LiveJournal System Administrators have been made aware that phone posts are not currently appearing in users' journals after correctly hanging up their phone.

I really have to wonder at this theoretical phone poster who somehow manages to hang up their phone incorrectly. Do they miss the cradle? Do they hit the talk button instead of end? Or is there some new Windows phone that requires you to hit * + # + End, or the phone will not be hung up properly?

[question] a friend of yours...
May 2nd, 2005 07:40 pm
Recommend me someone from elljay and tell me why. (That's not already on my friends list.)

I have been delighted by [info]ursulav, as would all you animal lovers out there. She's an excellent storyteller and often writes about the adventures of wildlife in her backyard. She is also the artist responsible for Azaezel Bunny and whenever I read her stories, the creatures take the form of one of her creations in my head.

Also, for obvious reasons, I have really been enjoying the [info]snopes_dot_com feed.
