Inquiring minds want to know. How do you...
1. Find new music?
2. Acquire said music once it is found? (Physical CDs? Itunes? iPirate.com?)
3. Store and organize your music?
4. Select and listen to music?
5. Share music with your friends?

weird firefox question
|
|
| April 15th, 2007 | 04:00 pm |
I typically use the [Home] and [End] keys to navigate content pages -- particularly my friends list. [Home] causes your browser to jump to the top of the content, while [End] causes it to jump to the bottom. I'm sure you can all see why this would be useful.
The problem is, lately those keys have stopped preforming that function. Instead, there is a little blinking line cursor on the page, as if it were a word processor. The up and down arrows cause my little cursor to move, the [Home] and [End] keys move my cursor to the beginning and end of the line, and surprisingly the [Page Up] and [Page Down] keys do something entirely strange, having nothing to do with either moving the pointless cursor, or scrolling in the page.
Anyone know what the deal is? I tried hitting the [Scroll Lock] key thinking that might be the problem, but no dice.

What is the purpose of government?
[Edit]
To rephrase: What do you think the purpose of government should be? (It doesn't matter if it is actually achieving this purpose or not.)

an egyptian service
|
|
| July 27th, 2006 | 02:25 pm |
x-posted from all over:
My girlfriend passed away Tuesday. Her religion was Egyptian and she had mentioned many times that she would like to have an Egyptian service. I am not a follower of the Egyptian religion myself, so I am not sure what this would involve or how I might go about finding someone to perform the service.
No specific arrangements have been made yet for the service, but it would be in Southern California, specifically Simi. The family would like something fairly simple and do not have a lot of money. I suspect that they will have a small service, probably at someones house or something. I think mostly they would want someone to officiate the service. (I don't know if that's the right word... I've never been to or planned a funeral before.)
Also, the family has already decided that she will be cremated. I don't know if that would be a problem, but that is the decision that has been made, and also I think what she wanted.
If anyone could point me in the right direction, or let me know what would be involved I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you very much for your time.
Addendum:
I have been trying to find someone local to perform the service from Kemet.org (Kemet is the specific sect of Egyptian religion that she believed in,) and other areas, however the chances of success seem pretty slim.
Someone on
kemet did offer to provide something that they felt would be appropriate to read at the service, and perhaps in combination someone could do an invocation of Anubis and Bast at the ceremony. It seems to me that someone would be able to do that without being specifically Egyptian, as long as they are Egyptian friendly, and have some knowledge of rituals and invocations in general. Perhaps I am incorrect in this, and I could see it being offensive to someone in an "all religions look the same" kind of way. At the same time, it seems like there is a lot of crossover in some religions - in Thelema I know for example they invoke gods from all sorts of religions.
It seems like it would be a lot easier to find someone of an Egyptian friendly faith to do a reading an invocation than it would be to find someone of Jamie's specific faith to carry out a orthodox Kemetic service. And I think she would have been happy with that.
If anyone knows someone who could either perform a full Kemetic service, or would be qualified to do a reading and invocation as mentioned above, please let me know. (As most of you know, I am agnostic and I do not feel it would be appropriate, nor would I feel comfortable doing so myself.)
I will be meeting with her family tomorrow to discuss arrangements, and I hope to have some idea of what options are available by then.
Edit:
I was able to contact someone from the Kemetic Orthodoxy who will be able to help me make the proper arrangements for the service. Thank you all for your well wishes, suggestions, and help.

testing, testing... 123...
|
|
| June 26th, 2006 | 02:58 pm |
Bisect ticket stuff is done. (*crosses fingers*) As usual, I didn't do as much as I was hoping to, but proably did as much as was feasible, if not just a tad more.
I'm working on the announcement to send to the mailinglist now. (By the way, I have discovered over the last view days that I am physically incapable of typing the word "mailinglist" without missing the "g" on the first pass.) If anyone is available right now to help me test a bit, I'd be very appreciative. A second pair of eyes inevitably catches something vital, and it sure would be embarrassing if my ticket sales rush was thwarted by something dumb like a link I forgot to add.
So, add a comment if you can help, or IM me (ethernight on Yahoo or AIM). I will give more specific instructions.

Cooking for lazy dummies
|
|
| June 17th, 2006 | 05:06 pm |
What recipes can you recommend for someone that is very lazy? Specific requirements:
Also, I have a crock pot. What can one do with a crock pot?
( examples of things I make now )
* Does not require ingredients that spoil. Things that can be dried canned or frozen only. (The only real exceptions I can think of to this are milk and cheese.)
* Think easy. See, what your thinking now that you think is easy - no, that's too much work. Think easier.
* Does not require special cooking utensils.
* Requires a minimum of pots and pans to dirty.
* Does not require spices or other ingredients I've never heard of.
* Is not too exotic. (I'm what some would call a "meat and potato's" girl.)
* Contains meat. Sorry my furry friends, but you're damned tasty.
* Can be made for one.
* An hour or less to make.

Canada?

| June 1st, 2006 | 04:11 pm |
Is anyone on my friends list in Canada that would be willing to do me an itsy bitsy favor?
There is something I want to order online, however the only company that sells it is based in Canada and only ships to Canada. Would anyone be willing to act as a go-between carrier for me? So I could have the item shipped to your house, then you would ship it on to me?
I'd be much obliged.

What I want today.
|
|
| January 20th, 2006 | 08:50 pm |
I want a dictionary site where I can search for words by their definitions. For example, a moment ago I was trying to remember the word that means, "bring back from the dead". (Luckily a friend was online to compensate for my muddled memory and tell me that the word I was looking for is "resurrect".) Seems like that would be simple enough to plug into a search engine and get a list of words back.
Does such a thing exist?

What sort of over-the-counter meds would one take for back pain?
I was gonna go to the store to pick up some wine for the pain, and some chocolate to help me feel better about the pain. But I thought someone might have a more practicle suggestion.
[Edit: Nevermind, you took too long I'm impatient. Google says acetaminophen and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID's). Translation: tylenol and motrin. (Guess you were right Adam.) I'm off to the store.]

books!
|
|
| January 18th, 2006 | 08:11 am |
So, everyone was going on and on about this LibraryThing website, which allows you to catalog your book collection online. I just didn't get it. Why was that so exciting? Can't ya just go look at the shelf?
Then earlier today I was wanting to post and ask people for book recommendations, and was trying to gather a list of the books I like so that people would know my taste. While typing them out I thought, "Now wouldn't it be nice to have something like an amazon.com wishlist, only it stored the books I've read and like instead of the ones I don't have yet?" After my eyes recovered from the brightness of the proveribal lightbulb above my head, I pointed my broweser to librarything.com and started cataloging.
My collection focuses on the books I think are really great, regardless of if I actually own them. So, whaddya say... I'll show you mine, if you show me yours...

elljay tools?

| January 13th, 2006 | 09:56 pm |
Anyone know of an linux elljay client with strong tags support?
I want to redo a lot of my tags, and the provided interface is pretty lacking. The main thing I want to do is take all posts with $existing_tag_a and use $existing_tag_b instead. As far as I can tell, the only way to do that using the web interface is one post at a time.
Oh yeah - search would be cool too.

Does anyone know how Ibuprofin works? Wikipedia says:
Can someone translate that for me?
"Ibuprofen is an NSAID which is believed to work through inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX); thus inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis. As with other NSAIDs, ibuprofen inhibits platelet aggregation, but is not used therapeutically for this action since it is a minor and reversible effect."

Ok, so I'm getting the impression that people are upset with the government for Katrina being as damaging as it was.
What do you feel they should have done? What specific sector of government should have done something? And why should it be the government?

settling down
|
|
| July 1st, 2005 | 12:52 pm |
Please explain to me why one would want to settle down. When someone talks about settling down, it makes me very sad. What I hear is, "I've decided to stop exploring the world and it's infinite amazing experiences in favor of..." In favor of what? I don't know.
I know that some sacrifices need to be made if you decide to have children. And while I don't personally see an appeal to that either, I can appreciate that it is an endeavor with its own rewards. So, I can imagine a person in that situation saying, "I have to sacrifice x, y and z because they are not compatible with having children for a time."
But that is not what people usually say. People usually say something like, "I have reached a stage of my life where..." If you press them, they may say something similar to the above, but I get the feeling that those are just logistical details that could be worked around if there weren't some other, deeper reason.
Obviously, no one actually says that about sushi. But you could replace "sushi" and "Japanese restaurants" with any number of other things that seem to be equally arbitrary to me. Honestly, I'm not sure why people don't have similar attitudes about sushi.
The sad thing is, I think I do understand. I just don't want to accept it.

"But why? You love sushi!"
"Well, there is a certain cost associated with eating sushi. And when you get to be my age, you become more careful with your resources."
"Yes, but you spend that much on this other kind of food all the time that isn't as yummy. Surely, you could set aside some amount of money to eat sushi every once in awhile."
"Well, yes. But you see, to eat sushi you have to go to a Japanese restaurant. And when you get to be a little bit older, you just don't go to Japanese restaurants anymore."
