first meetings
October 17th, 2007 03:53 pm
A friend of mine recently gave me, what we shall call a personality quiz. She asked,

When you first meet someone, is your first thought:
  • "Is this person a threat?"
  • "How can I connect with this person?"
  • "What can this person do for me?"

  • I answered that none of these were the case, but rather, "What needs to be done to successfully achieve the goal of this interaction?" (This might explain why I have historically had trouble meeting new people.)

I am pleased to report, I am neither Pirate, Ninja or Pikachu, but rather a Robot.

    What would your answer be?

    Community Sites Poll
    May 12th, 2006 01:40 pm
I had the idea this morning of taking a poll to get a general feel for what people feel is important for a community site, and posting it on every community site that I know of. I'd like to start with a preliminary poll though, to get an idea of what's out there, and if there are any questions that I should be asking that I don't know about yet.

I decided to make all of the fields textboxes, to make it easy for people to put in thing I hadn't heard or thought of. However, there are some options you might want to look at below the poll.

Feel free to expand your thoughts in the comments, and feel free to link to the poll in your blog.

What is wrong with people, anyway?
    April 24th, 2006 08:44 pm
The office I work in shares one kitchen between all of the many businesses on the floor. In the kitchen are some public utilities. A coffee maker, dishwasher, microwave, and fridge. I usually buy a 12 pack of soda, and other assorted drinks, and keep a couple at a time in the fridge.

Now, I don't usually pay that close attention to the rate at which I am drinking beverages, but I soon got the sneaking suspicion that I wasn't the only one enjoying the Diet Caffeine Free Dr. Peppers I stored in the fridge. In order to be sure, when I bought a fresh 12 pack of soda, I would save the tab each time I drank one. Sure enough, when the 12 pack ran out, I had a measly 8 tabs in my possession.

Ok, fine. Perhaps someone is under the mistaken impression that the soda was theirs. Nevermind the fact that I've never seen any other Diet Caffeine Free Dr. Pepper in the fridge. Or maybe they think that it was for public consumption. I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt. So, to allievate any confusion on the issue, I placed a piece of tape over the tab, and drew a little "x" with a sharpie. There. Now, no mistaking it.

Much to my dismay(*), my tasty and refreshing beverages continued to inexplicably dissappear from the fridge. Deciding that the situation called for more serious action, I replaced the "x" with the text, "Not Yours".

This seems to have allievated the problem for the most part, however, on a recent occation even one of my thusly labeled drinks (a Kerns juice box this time) found itself another home.

As I was relating this tale to [info]1_aga, she mentioned that her sister used to label her sandwiches with "I licked it". This has inspired me to come up with a bunch of labels. Nothing too blatently offensive - I don't want to offend everyone that happens to open the fridge. (For example, I decided "Not yours, asshole" and "Could be soda. Could be piss." were both a bit too extreme.) So far I've got:

    "Not yours"
    "I licked it"
    "Are you a thief?"
"You never know what will make someone snap"

    The Shield
    April 19th, 2006 03:00 pm
I've heard a lot of people say how great The Shield is. The aesthetic didn't seem particularly appealing, but then neither is the aesthetic of Oz or The Wire, which are nevertheless excellent shows. We just finished watching the first disc of Season 1 on netflix, and I have to say, I was thouroughly underwhelmed.

I know some shows take awhile to ramp up, so I'm willing to give it another shot. But I want to see it at it's best. So, if you love The Shield, please answer this poll.

    citing your work
    January 30th, 2006 02:43 pm
Every now and then I'll come across a passage in someones journal that is artfully written, and expresses beautifully something that is near and dear to my heart. Whenever I see something like that, I want to do something with it. Save it for posterity. Tattoo it to my forehead. Stand on a mountain top and point and shout for everyone who to see, "Yeah, that!"

I've been quietly collecting these passages for a few months now, in anticipation of somehow fulfilling this urge. I'm thinking of having one of them being randomly selected and displayed on my blog page. Or perhaps putting one at the end of each post. However, these ideas raise some ethical questions as to the moral nature of posting other peoples stuff.

Here's my feeling. If the post is public, there's no issue as long as they are linked to. If it's a filtered post on the other hand, the right thing to do would be to ask permission. Now, the place where it's a little more fuzzy is if the line came from comments in someones blog. I think the same principle applies for the most part - if they are posting a comment to a public post, no worries. If the post they are commenting on is filtered, ask first. However, I can see someone being more taken aback at something from a comment reposted than something from a post reposted. I think I'd be a lot more likely to ask the person if they posted in a comment, but I'm still undecided.

I think (assuming I ever get around to it,) that I'm going to do what I outlined above regardless, however I am curious to get some feedback about this anyhow. (Keep in mind, I am usually talking about one sentence, probably never any longer than three sentences.) So...
