70 Day Prayers
August 15th, 2006 08:43 pm
Part of the ancient Egyptian custom regarding the dead entails saying four prayers for (to?) the deceased on the 70th day. For those of you who are interested in participating in this ritual for Jamie, I have posted the text of the four prayers, along with some relavant information. Feel free to pass this along to anyone who might be interested.

Jamie memorial cards
July 28th, 2006 02:13 pm
Jamie's dad is making a memorial at his house for her where the people who care about her can come to visit with her again. (He had originally planned to have her ashes there, but apparently now there is some disagreement among the family as to what should happen with them.) Anyhow, he asked that I make a card and send it to him to put in the memorial. I think it would mean a lot to him if her all of her friends made something.

I haven't been able to talk to her mom. From what I understand she is not in a state where she can talk to anyone or handle these sorts of logistics. But I am sure that she and Jamie's brother would love something similar.

If you knew Jamie and you would like to share your support to the family, please comment here and I will send you my address where you can mail stuff to. Photographs, memories, a collage of the things that she loved. Stories of how you knew her and what she meant to you. A letter to her. Whatever your heart tells you.

Let me know if you are making one for her father's memorial, her mother's side of the family or both.

Anonymous comments are turned on, so you do not need a livejournal account to post. Just be sure to include your name and contact info in your post so I know who you are.

All comments are screened, which means they will only be visible to me.

Please send forward link to this post to anyone you know that was close to Jamie.

random memory
July 28th, 2006 02:02 am
Adam, Danielle, Jamie and I had been up all night, and now it's the wee hours of the morning. We are sitting on the front porch, when I look over at Jamie.

Me: "You sure are pretty."

Jamie: *mock bashful* "Awwww.
...I'll bet you say that to all the pretty girls."

an egyptian service
July 27th, 2006 02:25 pm
x-posted from all over:

My girlfriend passed away Tuesday. Her religion was Egyptian and she had mentioned many times that she would like to have an Egyptian service. I am not a follower of the Egyptian religion myself, so I am not sure what this would involve or how I might go about finding someone to perform the service.

No specific arrangements have been made yet for the service, but it would be in Southern California, specifically Simi. The family would like something fairly simple and do not have a lot of money. I suspect that they will have a small service, probably at someones house or something. I think mostly they would want someone to officiate the service. (I don't know if that's the right word... I've never been to or planned a funeral before.)

Also, the family has already decided that she will be cremated. I don't know if that would be a problem, but that is the decision that has been made, and also I think what she wanted.

If anyone could point me in the right direction, or let me know what would be involved I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you very much for your time.

Addendum:

I have been trying to find someone local to perform the service from Kemet.org (Kemet is the specific sect of Egyptian religion that she believed in,) and other areas, however the chances of success seem pretty slim.

Someone on [info]kemet did offer to provide something that they felt would be appropriate to read at the service, and perhaps in combination someone could do an invocation of Anubis and Bast at the ceremony. It seems to me that someone would be able to do that without being specifically Egyptian, as long as they are Egyptian friendly, and have some knowledge of rituals and invocations in general. Perhaps I am incorrect in this, and I could see it being offensive to someone in an "all religions look the same" kind of way. At the same time, it seems like there is a lot of crossover in some religions - in Thelema I know for example they invoke gods from all sorts of religions.

It seems like it would be a lot easier to find someone of an Egyptian friendly faith to do a reading an invocation than it would be to find someone of Jamie's specific faith to carry out a orthodox Kemetic service. And I think she would have been happy with that.

If anyone knows someone who could either perform a full Kemetic service, or would be qualified to do a reading and invocation as mentioned above, please let me know. (As most of you know, I am agnostic and I do not feel it would be appropriate, nor would I feel comfortable doing so myself.)

I will be meeting with her family tomorrow to discuss arrangements, and I hope to have some idea of what options are available by then.

Edit:

I was able to contact someone from the Kemetic Orthodoxy who will be able to help me make the proper arrangements for the service. Thank you all for your well wishes, suggestions, and help.
